The Boise State football team finished up this years series of spring practices with the annual spring football game.

It was the first real opportunity for the public to see the 2017 Broncos play on the Blue.

Broncos vs. Boise State

In recent years, the annual spring game has been called the “Blue and Orange Scrimmage.” This years format was a little different as the Grey Broncos would play against the Blue Boise State team.

Captained by Brett Rypien and Leighton Vander Esch, the Broncos defeated the Boise State squad, captained by Jake Knight and Avery Williams, 13-7.

This year’s spring game saw the likes of Cedrick Wilson, Alexander Mattison, and three projected starting offensive lineman including John Molchon, Mason Hampton, and Archie Lewis, not participating. They were held out due to injuries but are expected to be back by fall.

Due to their absence, players such as Sean Modster, A.J. Richardson, and Ryan Wolpin, along with others, saw the majority of the reps at their respected positions.

Modster led the team in receptions with 5, picking up 37 yards in the process.

Richardson led the team in yards-after-catch with 74. This was accounted for on 4 receptions.

Wolpin lead the way on the ground with a game-high 74 yards on 17 carries. He also caught two passes for 20 yards. Wolpin scored one of the games two touchdowns.

The quarterback position was a key element of yesterday’s spring game. Who would challenge Brett Rypien for playing time this fall?

Rypien finished the day completing 18 of his 31 pass attempts. These 18 receptions produced 154 yards.

On the other side, Jake Constantine finished the day completing 13 of his 28 pass attempts. Thee 13 attempts accumulated 123 yards.

Playing on Constantine’s side was JUCO transfer Rathen Ricedorff. Ricedorff finished the day completing 1 of his 3 pass attempts. That one completion went for 17 yards.

Though no touchdowns were thrown during the spring game, Ricedorff used his legs to get a score of his own.

With the likes of punter Sean Wale and kicker Tyler Rausa competing in the Boise State pro day, both positions are left vacant.

This years field goal kicker could be red-shirt freshman Joel Velazquez.

During the spring game, Velazquez connected from 26 and 49 yards.

The game featured one turnover. Captain Brett Rypien threw an interception to captain Avery Williams.

Game Over

Spring ball is now officially over. Now that the spring game is behind them, the Broncos will dive straight into summer workouts.

Starting Monday, the team will begin offseason workouts and conditioning.

Player-run practices will begin once school finishes for the semester. However, the team won’t formally reconvene until fall camp.
