Boise State Women’s Basketball team took on New Mexico for the Mountain West Championship today and despite foul trouble, walked off the court with a title as they took down the Lobos, 66-60. The win gives the Broncos an automatic berth the NCAA Tournament.
The Broncos (22-10) were in control for much of the first half behind the stellar play of Yaiza Rodriguez who led all Broncos at the end of the half with 7 points. Brooke Pahukoa and Askew weren’t far behind with 5 points a piece.
Last games hero, Shalen Shaw added four points of her own. Shaw also dominated the boards with 6 rebounds (3 offensive and 3 defensive). Askew and Childress each shot 100% from the field. The Broncos ended the first half up 29-22.
Both teams came out hot in the second half as scoring was pretty even between both squads. Boise State would take their largest lead of the game half way through the second half after a huge Pahukoa three pointer that put the Broncos up by 14 points.
The Lobos (20-12) weren’t done yet though, as they would eventually cut the lead to 9 off a big three point shot by Brown. Eventually New Mexico would bring the lead down to 5 and the Lobo crowd to their feet, but would be silenced by Pahukoa with a jumper to put Boise back up by 7.
The nail in the coffin came as Pahukoa sank in three free throws after being fouled from beyond the arc. The Broncos win 66-60.
Brooke Pahukoa was named tournament MVP as well as named to the MW All-Tournament Team. Pahukoa finished the tournament with 42 points, 15 rebounds, and 6 assist. Pahukoa finished the game with 16 points and five rebounds.
